Add a bit of critical thinking to the pot Social Media

I guess if there was one thing that could change in the status quo of my business would be the lemming-like attitude in the social web.
In most areas of daily life, I think that people read, process, and draw their own conclusions … and often with passion. Whether a political debate, the evaluation of a movie, or a discussion of current events I do not know anyone who simply receives a script from the Internet and read their own opinion.
However, when it comes to social web, it appears that is exactly what happens. People tend to repeat the thoughts of the leaders of thought a bit of gospel. It re-tweet their contributions without thinking. They gush about research of the day without even thinking about the real consequences – or even if the data are statistically significant and valid.
Why there is a disconnect? I think there may be several reasons.
A need for speed. The volume of information coming so quickly, I really have time to evaluate it? It is much easier to repeat an opinion from a "thought leader" to pass the time to come with an original idea.
The need to belong. Say you love a traditional media personalities like Bill O'Reilly. If you disagree with him, you never know and he never care. That is completely opposite to the social web. Expressing a contrary opinion is unique and almost certainly always be known and are at risk of being expelled from the inner circle, or as I wrote recently, the country club. The social web is an economy of favors. Expressing dissent is significantly toxic.
The lack of capacity. This is purely an observation on my part but I think people under 30 that I find are much more willing to believe and follow the flow without thinking critically. It's convenient. The perfect world for them would be a huge Wikipedia, where they can get answers without digging or thinking.
The disappointing aspect of this is that only I see the problem worse. News comes quicker. The web becomes more powerful. The dissent is less tolerated. I love to be wrong by the way, and I hope.
