Wellies Boots Known By Many Names
There are many names for rubber boots throughout the World. Although the design has been attributed to the Duke of Wellington that was some decades before vulcanised rubber was invented, and the use of rubber was put to the design.
An Australian who fought with Wellington, a man by the name of Bulcher, was commemorated Down Under where the boots are known as Bulcher's Boots, though the expression Gumboots is commonly used to the extent that there is a Gumboot Day in Australia where one of the activities is throwing the boot.
In South Africa where the climate is such that the waterproof property of rubber means that wellies boots would be perhaps less popular, a culture has grown up around their gum boots. Beginning because the mine owners did not allow speaking during work, gum boot music and dance was developed as a means of communication, and has led to it becoming a tourist attraction with dance troupes throughout the country.
In Russia there were political connotations put on the rubber boot. Rubber was cheaper than leather and in the time of Stalin, boot factories using rubber developed tremendously. Rubber was the proletariat, the much more expensive leather bourgeois and the latter quickly left the shelves of Russia for a couple of decades.
The Billy Boots of Northern USA and Canada are essentially the same product and have a role to play in everyday life as well as in an industrial context. Winters can be extremely harsh in this part of the World and warm waterproof footwear is essential together with increased protective insulation against the cold. The fishing industries also use them extensively but in this case, the wellies boots, sorry billy boots, are generally white.
The Scandinavian Countries suffer a similarly harsh winter to Canada and Russia and quite naturally there is a constant demand for rubber boots, and production lines are constantly at full stretch.
Colour has come into the product which perhaps is natural in our fashion conscious world. Originally these rubber boots were generally black, and they remain so in North America except for the red soles, other of course than the white working boots. In the UK, the phrase green wellie brigade was coined to describe country folk who were not short of money. Yellow boots seem to designate the wearer as a yachtsman or sailor but there are now every colour and pattern.
This merely illustrates the universal appeal of rubber boots and the need to co ordinate the colour of footwear with the clothes being worn. While rubber boots have yet to invade social events held indoors, they can be seen in outdoor events of a sporting nature in most parts of the year, whether worn for protection from damp conditions under foot, or as a warm alternative in cold weather. Whatever the reason, the boots are on show day after day.

i wore my rubber riding boots during the winter and i froze so does that mean if i rode in them when its 80-90 out i would be too hot?
Yes, probably. If you do need to ride in them during the summer, maybe you could wear them ONLY when riding - bring a different pair of shoes to wear around the barn when unmounted.
